Earl E. Smith is Chairman of the Cobb-Marietta Coliseum and Exhibit Hall Authority, which governs Cobb Galleria Centre and Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre. His leadership in Cobb County and metropolitan Atlanta spans four decades. He is Founder and Chairman of the Board of E. Smith Heating and Air Conditioning, and has been a leader in organizing and regulating the HVAC industry.
Mr. Smith's service to government, business, health, education and the arts has enhanced commerce and quality of life. He was named Marietta Daily Journal Citizen of the Year for 2001. In 2005, citizens representing many areas of community life organized a public reception to honor his dedicated service and contributions.
Born in Whitfield County, Georgia, and a U.S. Air Force Korean War veteran, Mr. Smith moved to Cobb County in 1959. He became involved in the Cobb County Chamber of Commerce, Boys & Girls Club of Cobb County, and Cobb Lions Club—eventually serving each as president and serving as Chamber Chairman in 2000. He was elected Chairman of the Cobb County Board of Commissioners, served as President of North Metro Technical College and on the boards of the Cobb Zoning and Planning Commission, Cobb Marietta Galleria Authority, and Cobb Marietta Water Authority.
Mr. Smith played a role in creating Cobb County's first comprehensive land use plan; Cobb County's public transportation system; state legislation creating the local option sales tax and local funding for transportation and other infrastructure improvements. He has chaired blue-ribbon committees studying efficiency in government and in education.
Currently, Mr. Smith serves on the boards of Riverside Bank, Cobb County YMCA, and KSU Golden University. He is an appointee of Governor Sonny Perdue to the Georgia State Board of Technical and Adult Education, an advisor to the Cobb Symphony, and chair of Friends of the Strand, a fundraising effort to renovate the 1930s-era theater in Marietta, Ga.
In the HVAC industry, Mr. Smith's leadership led to the adoption of FIVAC codes for Cobb County as well as licensing and code legislation for the state of Georgia. He is Founder and Charter President of Cobb Heating Association, and has served on the State Licensing Board and on the Georgia Electrification Council, serving as its President.
Mr. Smith makes hobbies of work, golf and bush hogging his pasture. Mr. Smith and his wife and partner, Rachel, have two daughters and two granddaughters.
Mr. Smith was appointed to the State Board of the Technical and Adult Education by Governor Sonny Perdue in 2005. He currently serves on the State Board’s Academic Standards and Programs, Audit and Compliance and Appeals Committees.
