LAURA "MOLLY" BICKERTON

Ogeechee Technical College

Jan Martin, Laura “Molly” Bickerton’s nominating instructor, was asked to submit one paragraph describing why her outstanding student should be the state GOAL winner and this is what she had to say about Molly:

Enthusiastic, humorous, and works well with others are just a few words that describe Laura “Molly” Bickerton. When you hear her personal testimony, you will immediately fall in love with this multifaceted young lady. She speaks from her heart and is always swift with a compliment. Her strengths of integrity and moral character are commendable.

Molly has been enrolled in the imaging sciences department for approximately five quarters. She completed her core with a GPA of 4.0. She is extremely meticulous in her current studies. She was nominated for GOAL in 2007 and was chosen as first runner-up during the college competition. In both classroom and clinical settings, Molly displays model work ethics. She is extremely motivated, as well as an intelligent, capable, and personable young woman. Her exceptional clinical evaluations are indicative of her dedication to the radiologic technology profession. Molly truly exemplifies the personality we desperately need in healthcare. She has worked exceptionally hard to develop the skills needed to perform the required duties as a student radiographer.

Molly is humble when complimented or praised and shows respect to not only her instructors, but also to her classmates. Molly realizes the importance of education and chose technical education where she felt she could reach her full potential and not become another number or face among the masses. She believes that technical education is an option not a second choice.

As the 2008 state GOAL winner, Molly was awarded an allowance to purchase a brand new 2008 Chevrolet Colbalt. Chevrolet partnered with the Technical College System of Georgia and sponsored this grand prize car. The awarding of a car is symbolic because it enables the state winner to literally go wherever their aspirations lead them. Molly proved to be that person, and we know that she is eager to show off her new Chevrolet Cobalt as she travels the state promoting technical education.

First runner-up in the Student of the Year competition is Charlene Hardy, a student in the occupational therapy assistant program at Augusta College.

Other finalists include Derrick Wade, who is studying early childhood care and education at Coosa Valley Technical College; Jennifer Collins, a student in the registered nursing program at West Central Technical College; and Sheila Kowalski, who is studying cosmetology at Middle Georgia Technical College.

Derrick Wade also received the coveted Fred Harper Award of Distinction, named in honor of a former vice president of student services at Central Georgia Technical College who was instrumental in founding the GOAL program. GOAL college winners vote for the GOAL student who is deemed most outstanding and best all-around.
