Dr. Alvetta Thomas is New President of Atlanta Technical College

Atlanta – the state board that oversees the Technical College System of Georgia has approved TCSG Commissioner Ron Jackson’s choice of Dr. Alvetta Thomas as the new president of Atlanta Technical College.

Thomas will assume the president’s job on March 1.

“Alvetta Thomas will be an outstanding leader for Atlanta Tech,” said Jackson.  “She’s a devoted educator with a strong commitment to the college and a desire to provide the very best in technical education for her students.  She’s a great choice for a great college.”

The previous president of Atlanta Tech, Dr. Brenda Jones, passed away last summer.

Thomas is currently the college’s vice president for academic affairs.  In that position, which she has held since 1997, she has managed the college’s certificate, diploma and associate degree programs and supervised the academic deans, faculty and staff.

She earned her doctorate in adult education from the University of Georgia in 2004.  She also has a masters in political science from Clark Atlanta University and a bachelors in political science from Alabama State University.

Atlanta Technical College served more than 3300 students in 2007 in a variety of technical education programs.  Almost 98% of the 998 graduates it produced last year are either currently employed or continuing their college education.

The Technical College System of Georgia consists of 33 colleges that last year enrolled 140,000 students in more than 600 technical education programs.  Thousands more took advantage of the system’s online, continuing education and adult education programs.  The TCSG also manages Quick Start, a workforce development program that provides free customized training to new, expanding and existing businesses.
