For Special Populations

The Technical College System of Georgia provides equal access to all program activities and provides assurance of nondiscrimination for all special-population students in admissions, programs/training and all activities.

Special populations (as defined by the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act of 2006) include: List of Special Populations Coordinators. If you are a student and also one of the special populations defined below, contact the Special Populations Coordinator at the college you are considering.

Special populations includes:

1) Individuals with disabilities - If you think you may need disability services when you attend college, please contact the Disability Services Coordinator at the college you are considering on the attached list.

2) Individuals from economically disadvantaged families, including foster children

3) Individuals preparing for nontraditional fields - The term "nontraditional fields" means occupations or fields of work, including careers in computer science, technology, and other current and emerging high skill occupations, for which individuals from one gender comprise less than 25 percent of the individuals employed in each such occupation or field of work. 

4) Displaced homemakers - Women Work! The term "displaced homemaker" means an individual who

(A) (I) has worked primarily without remuneration to care for a home and       family, and for that reason has diminished marketable skills;

      (II) has been dependent on the income of another family member but is       no longer supported by the income; or

      (III) is a parent whose youngest dependent child will become ineligible       to receive assistance under part A of Title IV of the Social Security Act not       later than 2 years after the date on which the parent applies for       assistance under such title; and

(B) is unemployed and is experiencing difficulty in obtaining or upgrading       employment

5) Individuals with limited English proficiency - The term "individual with limited English proficiencey" means a secondary school student, an adult, or an out-of-school youth, who has limited ability in speaking, reading, writing, or understanding the English language, and-

(A) whose native language is a language other than English; or

(B) who lives in a family or community environment in which a language       other than English is the dominant language

Services include programs that enhance or improve the academic, technical and employability skills of special populations students.  The Technical College System of Georgia is committed to developing and implementing procedures that encourage and support each student in their pursuit of a rewarding career, with emphasis on high skill, high wage or high demand occupations.
