PROTECT YOUR HEALTH

Health Literacy Program
Health literacy is the capacity to which individuals can read, understand, and act upon health-related information. Health literacy encompasses the ability professionals and institutions have for communicating effectively so that community members can make informed decisions and take appropriate actions to advocate for and protect their health.

The results of the 2003 National Assessment of Edult Education - Health Literacy of America’s Adults Report states that 36 percent of adults living in the United States demonstrated skills that were scored as basic or below basic in health literacy. To improve this situation, our trained instructors integrate health issues into lessons that address core reading, writing, and math skills. By attending free Health Literacy classes, adult students are able to receive instruction which will empower them to:

Navigate the healthcare system to receive needed services, including locating providers and services, filling out forms, and advocating for themselves
Share personal information and engage in dialogue with clinicians
Understand written and oral information given by doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and other health care professionals
Follow directions in taking medications, preparing for a procedure or test, and scheduling appointments
