ADVANCE YOUR CAREER

Workplace Education Program

The Office of Adult Education’s (OAE) Workplace Education Program focuses on the literacy and basic skills training that workers need to gain new employment, retain present jobs, advance in their careers, or increase productivity.  As Georgia embarks on a new endeavor with the “Work/Career Ready Certification” OAE looks forward to expanding our services to support a more literate Georgia toward a Work Ready Georgia.

The basis of the National Career Readiness System is ACT’s WorkKeys Job Skills Assessment, which examines the essential foundational skills needed for virtually every occupation. With Workplace Basic Skills being the core skills that employees need to do their jobs successfully, these skills are critical to the success of modern businesses. They are also crucial in public sector workplaces such as hospitals, schools and government offices.  By assessing an individual’s abilities in Applied Mathematics, Reading for Information and Locating Information their skill level is determined and thus can be matched to specific job requirements.

The Skill Levels identified by the Georgia Work Ready Program are Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum.  The higher the skill levels, the more jobs for which the applicant qualifies. To ensure these skill levels are met, OAE’s 37 Service Delivery Areas throughout the state will provide an assessment to Georgia’s adults seeking to validate their skill and knowledge level to meet the requirements of a specific profiled job or occupation.  In addition to assessments, Adult Education programs throughout the state will also provide remediation for those individuals seeking to improve skill levels.

To benefit businesses with workplace programs, the Georgia Legislature has developed incentives under Article 2, Chapter 7 of Title 48 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, 48-7-41.  The Georgia Tax Credit for Adult Basic Skills Education program provides credit to businesses that fund basic skills education for employees to enhance reading, writing, or mathematical skills up to and including the twelfth grade. The tax credit is $150.00 or an amount equal to one-third of the cost of education per full-time equivalent student; whichever is less, for each employee who successfully completes an approved adult basic skills education program.
