Position: Surgical Technology Program Chair and Instructor

Location: Murphy Campus

Department:  Academic Affairs

Reports to: Divisional Academic Dean

FLSA Designation: Exempt; works minimum of 40 hours per week

Nature of Instructional Duties: Under general supervision prepares lesson plans for classroom instruction for credited technical/occupational courses; develops program curriculum, syllabi, goals, and objectives; evaluates students’ progress in attaining goals and objectives. Requests and maintains supplies and equipment and prepares and maintains all required documentation and administrative reports; attends professional development training, workshops, seminars, and conferences; ensures safety and security requirements are met in the discipline area; meets with students, staff members and other educators to discuss students’ instructional programs and other issues; assists with recruitment, retention, and job placement efforts.  Teaches Surgical Technology courses in a classroom/lab/field environment that closely simulates the environment of the industry while maintaining knowledge of current trends and developments in the field.  Provides instruction in the theory and practical applications of Surgical Technology; establishes, measures, and evaluates program or departmental student learning outcomes for continuous student improvement and success.  Requires strong computer skills, communication skills, and ability to interact effectively with a diverse student population. Position may require committee and project assignments or other duties as assigned as well as day/evening/distance learning classes and activities.

Nature of Surgical Technology Program Chair Duties: Responsible for providing leadership in discipline to help ensure the quality and success of the department. Serves in his/her assigned discipline, and works with faculty to promote continuous improvement in the quality of instruction within the Surgical Technology program. In collaboration with program faculty and in compliance with established college policies and procedures, the Surgical Technology Program Chair coordinates, collects, and submits input from Surgical Technology program faculty on the following:

  • Course offering rotations and scheduling recommendations for submission to Director of Instruction
  • Instructional program planning and curriculum review to include probe response reporting
  • Surgical Technology Program budgetary requests
  • Program advisory committee meetings and documentation
  • Accreditation and compliance documentation and administrative reports as requested
  • Textbook and instructional material selection
  • Student Learning Outcome documentation of assessment, data, and use of results
  • New faculty mentoring
  • Program marketing and recruitment efforts
  • Published program information review

 

 

Minimum Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Health-related field from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • Certified as a Surgical Technologist through a national certifying credentialing organization accredited by the National Commission on Certifying Agencies (NCCA).
  • Minimum total of five years of experience, either in the operating room scrub role or as an instructor in surgical technology, or a combination of both, within the past ten years.
  • Valid Driver’s License

Preferred Qualifications:

 

           

  • Associate’s degree or higher in Surgical Technology from an accredited institution
  • Teaching experience in a Health Science related field at the postsecondary level
