9,200 Attend SkillsUSA State Conference!
SkillsUSA Georgia Postsecondary hosted the state championships on February 22-24, 2024 at the Georgia World Congress Center in collaboration with SkillsUSA Georgia High School and Construction Ready. Nearly 9,200 people attended the event including industry partners alongside elementary school, middle school, high school, and technical college students and instructors.
The 3 largest postsecondary membership chapters are: Athens Technical College, Savannah Technical College, and Wiregrass Georgia Technical College. The postsecondary chapters with the largest membership increase from the previous year are: Savannah Technical College, Southern Regional Technical College, South Georgia Technical College, and Gwinnett Technical.
The 3 chapters with the most state competition medals (gold, silver, and bronze) are: Gwinnett Technical College with 45 medals, Savannah Technical College with 28 medals, and Augusta Technical College with 24 medals. The chapters with the most state gold medalists advancing to the national championships are: Gwinnett Technical College with 26 gold medals, Savannah Technical College with 16 gold medals, and Lanier Technical College with 13 gold medals.
The Chapter Excellence Program honors chapter achievement relative to SkillsUSA’s framework of developing personal skills, workplace skills, and technical skills grounded in academics. SkillsUSA Georgia Postsecondary recognized the following colleges with a first level honor in recognition as a Quality Chapter for achieving essential standards of excellence: Athens, Augusta, Central Georgia, Gwinnett, Lanier, Savannah, Southern Crescent, Southern Reigonal, West Gorgia, and Wiregrass Georgia. A second level for Chapters of Distinction was awarded, with levels given to colleges who met a second tier of excellence: bronze, silver, and gold. This is the highest honor that the state can give to a chapter. Chapters of Distinction Silver Level was awarded to: Athens Technical College, Savannah Technical College, and Southern Crescent Technical College. Chapters of Distinction Gold Level was awarded to: Gwinnett Technical College, Lanier Technical College, and Wiregrass Georgia Technical College.
State officers were elected for the 2024-2025 school year as follows (in no particular order): Lilliana Cabaniss, Athens Technical College; Rashell Tanner, Augusta Technical College; Joseph De Lima, Lanier Technical College; Robert Buice, Lanier Technical College; Shelby Colbaugh, Lanier Technical College; Corina Stewart, Savannah Technical College.
Our 2024 Advisor of the Year for SkillsUSA Georgia Postsecondary was awarded to Mohamed Belal from Gwinnett Technical College.
More than 1,000 business, industry and labor sponsors actively support SkillsUSA at the national level through financial aid, in-kind contributions and involvement of their people in SkillsUSA activities.
The majority of the technical colleges have SkillsUSA chapters. Membership in SkillsUSA affords students the opportunity to demonstrate occupational and leadership skills by competing in state and national competitions. SkillsUSA State competitions are held annually in the spring and the national competitions are held in June. At the annual-level SkillsUSA Championships, over 5,200 students compete in 91 occupational and leadership areas. At the state level, approximately 500 students compete in about 64 occupational and leadership contests.
SkillsUSA Georgia Postsecondary delegates voted for, and we installed the 2024-2025 state officer team. The state officer team then participates in intensive training and team building sessions to further prepare them for their year in office. The officers were also evaluated on their leadership potential, personal characteristics, knowledge, and commitment to our organization, which resulted in the designation of their individual officer positions.
