Frequently Asked Questions
What are my rights as a student?
Every college has a student handbook that you should receive when you become a student. Most of the colleges have their handbook on their website as well as hard copies for students. Your rights and responsibility as a student should be listed in this handbook.
How do I submit a complaint regarding something that happened at my technical college?
A Grievance Procedure should be printed in every college catalog or student handbook. You will need to follow this process exactly as it is written.
Can I challenge a grade that I received if I don’t think it is correct?
A process for challenging a grade should be printed in every college catalog or student handbook. You will need to follow this process exactly as it is written.
Where do I go to get help understanding my class work?
If you do not understand something, the first thing you should do is speak to your instructor. If speaking to the instructor is not sufficient, you may wish to check with your college’s Student Services department to see if there are tutors available to assist you.
Why won’t a college tell me whether my child is attending classes or what his/her grades are?
All colleges that receive federal funding are bound by a Federal Act call the Family Educational rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) The general purpose of the act is to ensure students access to their education records and to protect such individuals rights to privacy by limited the transferability of their records without their consent. (Joint Statement in Explanation of the Buckley/Pell Amendment, 120 Cong. Rec. 39,858, 39,862 ( Dec. 13, 1974)). “Generally speaking, parent of children who attend or have attended a school that received federal funding has rights under FERPA. However, parents transfer their rights under FERPA to their child when he or she ‘has attained eighteen years of age or is attending an institution of post-secondary education.’ 20 USC1232g(d). “(2003, FERPA Answer Book Supplement 10, page 1:2.)
Why do I have to take a test after I am admitted to the college but before I register for classes?
Most students are required to take placement surveys prior to registering for classes. These tests help determine the best place for you to start your education. We do not wish to place you in classes that are too easy for you, but we also do not wish to place you in a class for which you need a little review before enrolling.
I need a transcript sent from the college to an employer or another college; will you send it for me?
All student records are housed at the college the student attended. Because the Central office does not retain any student records, please contact the technical college you attended. Make sure to provide the college with your full name, prior names if appropriate, current address, dates of attendance, student ID#, birth date, and an address as to where you want the transcript mailed. Your college may charge you a processing fee for this transcript.
